About SPRiNG Nigeria
About the SPRiNG Programme
Strengthening Peace and Resilience in Nigeria (SPRiNG) is a UK-funded initiative designed to support a more peaceful and climate-resilient Nigeria. By addressing the root causes of conflict and vulnerability, SPRiNG works to reduce violence, strengthen local systems, and promote inclusive governance across conflict-affected areas in North-West and North-Central Nigeria.
A Transformative Vision for Peace and Stability
SPRiNG is grounded in a politically informed, evidence-based approach that integrates environmental science, political economy, and conflict analysis. Our goal is to create a more stable and peaceful Nigeria where citizens benefit from reduced violence and increased resilience to the pressures of climate change.
SPRiNG In Action
SPRiNG supports locally led initiatives that address the key drivers of conflict and fragility. SPRiNG is delivered through a combination of Technical Assistance, grants to CSOs, capacity building of community actors, governmental and civil society organisations, research and learning and partnerships.
SPRiNG’s current focus areas include:
Conflict Prevention and Resolution
Strengthening early warning and response (EWER) systems, promoting dialogue and reconciliation, and supporting peaceful dispute resolution mechanisms.
Inclusive and Responsive Governance
Enhancing the capacity and inclusivity of justice and security institutions, advocating for gender-sensitive policies, and supporting women and youth participation in peacebuilding.
Natural Resource Management (NRM)
Encouraging sustainable agricultural and pastoral practices, improving land governance, and enabling communities to adapt to climate variability.
Community Resilience
Tackling divisive narratives, substance abuse, and social exclusion while improving livelihoods, especially for women and youth.
Evidence and Learning
As an adaptive, evidence-based programme, SPRiNG collects knowledge and insights that shapes its initiatives and guide international programming.
Long-Term Impact
Through supporting Nigerian stakeholders to become able to respond to conflict, security, justice, and natural resource management challenges in target areas, SPRiNG aims to
Reduce incentives for violence, especially in relation to resource competition
Increase the use of institutions or mechanisms for non-violent dispute resolution
Improve public confidence in institutional management and conflict response
Strengthen community communication and cooperation
Increase economic productivity and resilience, including sustainable natural resource management and practices
Enhance the resilience of populations to adapt and respond to climate challenges
