Strengthening capacity for realising women, peace and security agenda in Plateau State.
Plateau State has long faced complex security challenges, including intercommunal violence, farmer–herder conflicts, land disputes, and violence against women. Despite these challenges, women have historically remained underrepresented in peacebuilding processes and decision-making platforms, leaving their perspectives and protection needs insufficiently reflected in policies aimed at restoring peace and stability.
Through the SPRiNG Programme, Women for Positive Peace Building Initiative (WOPPI) is supporting the effective implementation of the Plateau State Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security (2024–2028). By strengthening institutional capacity, improving coordination, and promoting inclusive participation, the initiative is helping ensure that women’s voices and leadership are integrated into peace and security governance.
Intervention Highlights
The project focused on revitalising the State Action Plan Implementation Committee (SAPIC)—the key structure responsible for coordinating and overseeing the implementation of Plateau State’s Women, Peace and Security agenda.
SPRiNG supported WOPPI to conduct a technical review of institutional gaps and provide hands-on technical assistance to strengthen the committee’s functionality. This included reconstituting its membership to ensure broader representation from government institutions, civil society, youth groups, and persons with disabilities.
The programme also facilitated the development of the committee’s terms of reference, formal appointment processes, and structured meeting schedules to support effective coordination and accountability.
Capacity-strengthening workshops and short-term mentoring further equipped committee members with the knowledge and skills needed to implement the State Action Plan effectively.

By revitalising the SAPIC and improving coordination among stakeholders, the project ensures that peacebuilding initiatives are more inclusive, accountable, and responsive to the needs of women and communities affected by conflict.
The improved participation of diverse stakeholders—including youth and persons with disabilities—also strengthens ownership of the WPS agenda and enhances prospects for sustainable implementation.
